My Journey Selling Cupcakes

                                My Cupcake Days

Selling Cupcakes can be a lucrative business, but selling them online can be even better. It just takes a lot of work and a lot of money. While I was starting my home cupcake business I was also working full time with on call weekends and had two kids.

It took a lot from me to build my business. And don’t get me wrong, I loved it. I love to decorate cupcakes and cakes and I love to see my customers faces when I deliver their baked goods firsthand after finishing the order.

My cupcake business was lucrative and a good way to work from home and be with my kiddos, but it got too big for just me, and what was going to be expected of me next would send me in a spiral of working 12 hour days and barely seeing my kids at all. After three years I made the sound decision to end my cupcake business and move on to something else.

Baking is a great joy, it’s fun and it can make you a lot of money if you have yummy cupcakes and cakes and you build a great social media following and clientele. I still have customers call me now, four years later asking if I could do a custom order for them. Unfortunately, I turn them down and leave the baking for my family and special occasions.

Are You Serious About Cupcakes?

If this is really something you want to do, and you think you could make it work then I say go for it. But know, there will be some long days and a lot of clean-up. My family always insisted that I hire outside help so I could stay in business, but when I started my cupcake business, it wasn’t to work long hours and build a whole store, it was just to be a stay at home mom doing something I loved.

It’s funny how fear can give us the motivation to quit. Don’t let fear convince you that you can’t do something. As moms, we can set a great example for our little ones by being independent and giving them a great life.

If you have no training in decorating cupcakes and cakes, there are plenty of YouTube videos and tutorials on Pinterest that could help you out. It’s really simpler than you think.

I was able to find classes for 20$ at my local Michaels and AC Moore and I really learned a lot there and was able to broaden the kind of decorating I was doing. And one thing I learned is presentation is key. Beautiful website, boxes, business cards and so on. People are drawn to a beautiful presentation and they will keep coming back for more.

But as I said before, you have to be ready for how big your business can be and know that spending more time with your little one will take a backseat to your cupcake business.

Just because it didn’t work for me doesn’t mean it won’t work for you. To each his own.

What I Decided To Do For A Stay At Home Business

I have a degree in Creative Writing and English, I love to write. It’s always been a dream of mine to write and so naturally I wanted to find ways that I could use my knowledge and creativity and make money from it.

That’s where my online business comes from.

Now that I have another little one at home (about to be 2) I know for sure that I want to stay home and take care of him. That doesn’t just mean now. In the later years, he will want to come home and get homework help, make cupcakes for his class, have play dates with other kids, and get a ride to and from school, (because I don’t do school busses) And I want to be there for him.

I don’t want him to spend an extra three hours at school because I have to work until 5. I want to be the one to help him with his homework and spend time with him while I cook dinner.

So, How Can I Make This Possible?

work-from-home-mommyYou can start an online business. Right???? That is the way to go. With an online business, you have the freedom to do all the things I mentioned above plus more. Imagine school vacations being able to actually take your kid on a vacation instead of sending him to the Boys and Girls Club. He deserves your attention and you want to be able to give him that.

I never imagined that I could run a successful business from home and actually have the freedom that I have now. I get to spend so much time with my son, playing, reading, coloring, and watching educational shows, I get to make him breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and my baby has never stepped foot in a daycare center.

This is the life I wanted for him.

Now, The Hard Part.

When I started my online business, it was hard at first. I decided to find a platform that I could get free training and website hosting and let me tell you, although It’s easy to start the business through the training, it takes hard work and dedication to maintain it.

You have to be detail oriented, hard-working, and very dedicated. This means sticking to your training, building your business through content for your blogs, promoting on social media, keyword research, and finding ways to help people with your blog. Like I’m doing right now. And no, you don’t need a degree in creative writing or in anything, really.

You may be asking how you can make money with a blog. Along with building your online business, will come affiliate marketing. This is where the money will come from. Through reviews, promoting products, sharing your ideas about products you find helpful and sharing as many tips as you can, you will make money from commissions.

But how? When you become an affiliate marketer, you will pair with business like Amazon, Rakuten, ClickBank and more to promote their products on your blog and you will make a commission from whatever sales come through your links.

I know cupcakes are pretty, but I think an online business is the best way you can create a sustainable income and set up your future for the better.

So How Did I Get Started?

I found a company called Wealthy Affiliate. They have the best platform for getting started building your own business, and the best part is, you can start for free. You get to pick your own niche, and build a business the way you want to with guidance and training. What is a niche? It’s an interest that appeals to a small, specialized section of the population.

Try baby toys for instance. You can build an online business about baby toys, the best ones on the market, the safest toys for babies, teethers, anything pertaining to baby toys and there is your business.

You build your blog based on this niche, or topic, and introduce toys, review them, share your advice on what you like or don’t like. You will create a link so that the person reading your blog can buy said toy and then you get a commission. Sounds great, right? Yes.

If you are that into the cupcake idea, try creating an online business about cupcakes, baking, recipes, best baking pans, ingredients, and so on. You get my drift and there’s no 12 hour shifts and cleaning involved.

You have full say in what you choose to build your business about. The platform that I mentioned, Wealthy Affiliate, they are only there to guide you, give you support, training and classes, and great hosting and themes for your website so it never fails. As you can see, I am using Wealthy Affiliate right now, with this blog you are reading, and I have all the say in how it looks, what I write, and how I present it. Pretty cool, huh? Yup.

You can have a blog just like this one, you can be an affiliate marketer, stay at home mom, your own boss, however you look at it, you can do it.

Just remember, working with Wealthy Affiliate is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It takes time to build a sustainable business and see traffic and money from it. As much as you put into it you will get the reward of it.

My Take Away

If you are interested in being your own boss, a stay at home mom, having the freedom to be with your kids, or just looking to stop answering to someone else, then this is for you. You have nothing to lose by trying their free 7 days of training and getting your 2 free websites up and running.

If you decide that you want to stay with WA, it’s just 19$ for the first month and 49$ a month thereafter. Or, you can choose to pay for the year which is 359$ a month (30$ each) and save yourself some money.

I think it’s worth it, and guess what, if you decide you don’t want to pay for anything, you can continue to build your business without the training for free. But the training and support is worth it.

They offer so much in terms of encouragement, training, support, extra classes, 24/7 community support and you can reach out to the owners of the company through private message if you need to.

Take my advice, look around the platform, get a feel for it, see if you like it, start building your website and get your online business running. If you don’t like it you can back away and start selling cupcakes. No credit card required.

I hope this post was very informative for you and you were able to take something away from it. I really want to see me fellow mommies succeed and have the life they want, just like I have now.
